Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) and RWE Power AG founded a project company to develop a modern commercial and industrial area with an attached container terminal. The joint venture will develop and market a site in close cooperation with the local authorities and the region. The approximately 53-hectare area is predominantly recultivated area of the Garzweiler mine in the area of the city of Grevenbroich and the municipality of Jüchen.
While 45 hectares of the area are being made available for commercial and industrial use, a terminal of combined transport (container terminal) is planned on an area of eight hectares. As a result, the area can be connected to the national rail transport. The container terminal should also benefit the logistics distribution centers located near the planned industrial park. In the future, these will have the opportunity to shift their traffic from road to rail.
“The development and marketing of such areas requires great expertise, a good network and numerous discussions with the participating municipalities and interested companies, so that the region will benefit in the long term,” emphasises Lars Kulik, Member of the Executive Board of RWE Power. “Duisport adds its experience in the development of integrated transportation concepts and logistics areas to this joint venture.”
“We also want to develop a significant commercial center with many jobs on the left bank of the Lower Rhine. With this highly attractive area, we are expanding our available space. As a result, the logistics industry, which is important for North Rhine-Westphalia, will be sustainably strengthened,” says duisports CEO Erich Staake.
RWE Power AG, Essen / Cologne, is responsible for the generation of electricity from lignite and nuclear energy in the RWE Group with its approximately 10,300 employees. It operates three lignite opencast mines in the Rhineland. The production mainly serves to generate electricity in its own power plants. The lignite is also refined into solid fuel and filter materials.
