Less air freight in the first half of the year 2019 – but intensified cooperation with the logistics companies DHL and Kuehne + Nagel

The air freight segment at the Vienna airport showed a clear decline in the month of June. At 22,146 tonnes (cargo arr+dep) last year’s figure was missed by 12.7 per cent. The total air freight volume from January to June 2019 dropped by 4.6 per cent to 135,984 tonnes, tells a press release of Flughafen Wien AG.

Notwithstanding the above, the Vienna airport was able t consolidate and expand its position as a partner of international logistics groups. On the 5th of July, Vienna International Airport signed a partnership agreement with Kuehne + Nagel on pharma freight handling. This partnership shall further enhance service levels for customers from the pharma & healthcare industry in Austria and the neighbouring countries.

On May 23rd, DHL Global Forwarding, Deutsche Post DHL Group’s air and ocean freight specialist, together with DHL Freight, one of Europe’s leading road freight providers, openined of DHL’s new Vienna Airport campus in the county of Fischamend. Along with some 3,500m2 of office space, DHL’s new Vienna Airport campus includes two freight terminals, each measuring some 12,000m2 and consisting of roughly 5,000m2 for DHL Global Forwarding warehousing and handling, as well as 7,000m2 for DHL Freight.

In order to meet the steadily growing demand for logistics and transport services in the life sciences and healthcare sector, DHL has also created larger capacities for temperature-controlled goods. With over 1,200m2, DHL Global Forwarding has doubled its space in this area.
