Tyrol’s state government reacts to the massive evasion traffic due to congested highways by issuing driving bans on several provincial roads and the low-ranking road network in the metropolitan area of Innsbruck and the Wipptal. At the motorway exits, motor vehicle drivers will not be able to make local detours from 7 am to 7 pm, unless it is transport of destination, origin or residence there. The driving restrictions will apply from Saturday 7 am to Sunday 7 pm in both directions. The measure will apply until 14 September 2019, announces the Tyrolean state government.
“An exceptional situation requires extraordinary measures. When Tyrol’s streets are too busy on holiday weekends, there is need for action”, state governor Günther Platter, vice governor Ingrid Felipe, vice governor Josef Geisler and Colonel Markus Widmann, head of the police traffic department, at a presentation in the Landhaus.
Josef Geisler adds: “It can’t be that there is no getting through even for emergency vehicles. We can not and must no longer watch this – such a situation needs appropriate measures. It’s about steering the transiting traffic.” This should succeed above all with the support of navigation devices, in which the driving prohibitions are recorded and thus a display of alternative routes is prevented.
The
driving ban applies to all motor vehicles in transit in Tyrol – including cars
and motorcycles. The destination, source and
resident’s traffic is excluded from the driving restrictions.
In cooperation with Asfinag, the driving bans should be
alerted at an early stage by means of electronic scoreboards.
Drivers exiting the motorway are then immediately directed
back to the highway by signboards.
Ingrid Felipe: “We are responding to the events of the
past weekends, where there were multiple traffic jams on all alternative routes
off the Inntal and Brenner autobahn, as the navigation devices have piloted the
road users on the state roads to avoid the congestion on the highway “.
With this measure they want to guarantee the safety on the
domestic roads and the traffic flow as good as possible and to relieve the
population along the classical alternative routes, the attendees agree.
Legally, this measure is based on regulations of BH Innsbruck and Stadtmagistrat Innsbruck. The driving bans are recorded by the executive in the traffic information system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and are thus available to the navigation operators: “We are confident that the navigation devices will then calculate the route so that there will be no evasion traffic,” explains Markus Widmann, who adds that the executive will control neuralgic spots: “Travelers should stay on the main routes. This is being closely monitored by us.”
Brenner Street is also under strict observation by the traffic police and the state. Further measures will be taken if necessary.
