Steiermark Transport und Logistik: Block trains remain their core business

On June 1st, 2018, the new Steiermarkbahn railway company was spinned off from the enterprise Steiermärkische Landesbahnen. The European legal and the adapted national legal requirements required to clearly separate the operation of the infrastructure and the transport service, both organisationally and legally. This is implemented by the following new legal and organisational form:

– Steiermärkische Landesbahnen (STLB) as the business enterprise of the province of Styria.

– Steiermarkbahn and Bus GmbH (STB) for the mainstream handling of public transport service contracts in the railway and bus sectors.

– Steiermarkbahn Transport und Logistik GmbH (STB TL) for the handling of freight and logistics services as well as special services as a subsidiary of STB.

The purpose of the business of Steiermarkbahn Transport und Logistik GmbH (STB TL) is the provision of freight transport services by rail and related logistical services. The company was founded in the year 2000 and reorganised as a subsidiary in Steiermarkbahn und Bus GmbH as part of the restructuring.

The most important business area of the STB TL is block train transport by rail. The services are provided throughout Austria, but also within Europe in cooperation with partners. Containers, vehicles and vehicle parts, iron and metals, petroleum products, wood and wood products, chemical products and much more is accepted for transport. Container traffic is becoming increasingly important there. In 2017, a freight volume of around 1.4 million tones was transported.

In addition, the operation of rail sidings, shunting and the wagon positioning are covered in the service portfolio. The scheduling service is available around the clock, seven days a week and ensures efficient transport monitoring and detailed information on the respective order status at all times.

The business enterprise Steiermärkische Landesbahnen (STLB) operates about 124 kilometers of railway infrastructure. These include 77 kilometers of narrow gauge track (760 mm gauge) and 47 kilometers of standard gauge gauge (1435 mm gauge). In addition to the different gauges, the routes also have different traction systems. The tasks of their business enterprise include the construction, operation and maintenance of the railway infrastructure as well as the operation of the workshops in several locations.

As the operator of the Graz Süd freight terminal, the company also handles all railway and transhipment activities (around 200,000 containers per year). These include shifting, shifting control, crane operation, track maintenance, container transfer, container and wagon repair.
