RCG invests in a “common IT language” for its own traction network

The activities of the Rail Cargo Group – the freight division of ÖBB – are being continuously expanded. RCG operates its own locomotives in eleven European countries. Introducting a new IT system is the next step of standardising international production systems to create a holistic platform for dispatchers and customers.

Since the beginning of 2018, the RCG group’s program Cargo Connect International has been working on the definition of a uniform IT solution that is to be used to handle rail freight traffic, in particular planning, ordering and disposition of resources. The aim is to standardise beyond national borders, in order to be able to speak a common language in terms of international system technology. As part of the program, the group signed an agreement with CRX Software in July 2018 for the software solution RailCube. Previously, a pilot project was carried out at Rail Cargo Carrier in Germany.

RailCube is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution that is currently used by rail transport companies in more than twelve European countries and supports the planning and scheduling of international rail services. RailCube is available in multiple languages and compatible with interoperability standards. With the gradual implementation of the software solution in all Rail Cargo Carrier companies and Rail Cargo Hungaria, which began in July 2018, RCG is taking a major step by mid-2020 towards becoming a “digital carrier”.

With 8,700 employees, branches throughout Europe and an annual turnover of EUR 2.2 billion, Rail Cargo Group is one of the leading rail logistics companies in Europe. Together with strong partners, the Rail Cargo Group operates a nationwide network of door-to-door logistics in Europe and beyond to Asia. It connects European conurbations and harbors with prospering economic centers of Russia, Turkey and China. The operating controlling company of the Rail Cargo Group is Rail Cargo Austria AG.
