Ro-ro service in Ennshafen shows good development – transhipment of sowing machines by Pöttinger to Eastern Europe

Pöttinger’s sowing machines go to water in Ennshafen

Following a successful start of the ro-ro service with Donau Star BG in 2015, the next ro-ro transhipment was carried out in the port of Ennshafen in early February.

Some sowing machines from Alois Pöttinger Maschinenfabrik GmbH were transported for the customers on barges to Romania or Bulgaria. The agricultural machines have a single weight of up to nine tonnes, and a length of nine meters.

Mag. Christian Holezius, Pöttinger Maschinenfabrik is very satisfied: “Barges are high-performance and cost efficient transport means for big and heavy machines. The ro-ro service in Enns is a good alternative to road transport for our machines, which can sometimes only be manipulated rolling. The transhipment in the port of Ennshafen was well organised and smooth. We are thinking about transporting more machines on the waterway in the future.“

The ro-ro service on the Passau-Ennshafen-Vidin-Ruse route offers many advantages to shippers of machines parts or oversized and overweight machines, as e.g. no special transport approvals are required, or safety accompanying for heavy or special transport on the road. Moreover, in case of heavy rolling loads no costs for mobile cranes required for conventional transport must be paid.
