Maersk Line currently serves the Austrian container terminals in Wolfurt, Salzburg, Linz, Enns, Vienna and Graz, on the basis of cooperations with well-known operators. “These transports work perfectly,” said Jörn Fönschau, Director National Sales Germany / Austria, and Johannes Tenschert, Head of Network Corridor Design – NEO LOC Maersk Line.
Nevertheless, the container shipping company is planning to launch its own railway services towards Austria as distinctive features as opposed to competitors. Initially, the main focus will be on the relations to the southern ports, where the company already operates rail services between Koper on one hand, and Budapest and Bratislava on the other hand.
The plan provides for the shipping company placing empty containers from Bratislava to Austria on demand, where the exporting economy needs every empty box. He also considers similar models for railway services from the German seaports to Munich and Ulm, in order to serve western Austria.
At the customer event, the representatives of the Maersk Line showed a clear commitment to contine the branch office in Vienna. This was due to the speculations within the industry, according to which the world’s largest supplier in container shipping considers withdrawing from Austria.
But nothing could be further from the truth. To the numerous present guests Jörn Fönschau confirmed that the company takes this market very serious and wants to further develop it. “Maersk Line wants to grow in Austria!”, he emphasised.
