Luka Koper d.d. celebrated its 60th anniversary with more than 500 guests from all over the world recently. There were also numerous customers and business partners from Austria who made a significant contribution to the rise of the Slovenian seaport as a hub for maritime freight transport in the northern Adriatic Sea.
For 2016, port statistics show a total turnover of 22 million tonnes, including 844,766 TEUs in the container segment and 790,736 units at the Car Terminal. In the first half of 2017, the Luka Koper Group increased the cargo throughput by 6 percent and handled 11.95 million tonnes in total. In the container segment, a volume increase of 9 percent to 459,965 TEU was recorded. At the car terminal the revenue was slightly declining.
Currently, an investment program worth EUR 300 million is being implemented, of which EUR 235 million are earmarked for the container terminal. Its capacity will be increased to 1.3 million TEU by 2020. This is accompanied by the acquisition of the most modern equipment as a measure to increase the efficiency of the handling operations. These include the recently installed RMG cranes and the two new Super-Post Panamax cranes with the capability to handle 20,000 TEU container ships.
At the car terminal, new car parks and an additional berth are built. A multipurpose warehouse for general cargo and dry bulk was recently completed at Pier II.
