The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group and voestalpine have developed a pioneering innovation for the international freight transport market. TransANT is the first modular lightweight wagon for rail freight transport and enables different superstructures adapted to customer requirements to be mounted on standardised platform wagons.

This new generation of wagons, based on the customer and industry know-how of the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group and the materials expertise of voestalpine, offers significant advantages for freight transport thanks to its lower weight and modularity. The first set of 13 double units with a train length of 293 meters was delivered to Logistik Service GmbH (LogServ), a subsidiary of the voestalpine Group, in Linz on November 21.

RCG’s Chief Sales Officer Thomas Kargl: “TransAnt shows how the rail freight business model is geared to specific customer requirements and delivers a tailor-made product. And this innovation is also an example of how we are leading the rail industry and rail freight traffic into a modern future.”

The total order of Logserv GmbH comprises 30 double units “of TransANT with a total length of 675 meters and a total weight of 1,170 tonnes. All units will be handed over by the end of 2019.

“The bundled know-how has created a new generation of wagons that also sets new environmental standards. The use of our high-strength lightweight steels increases efficiency and saves voestalpine 100 train trips in ore transport per year,” Wolfgang Mitterdorfer, Sales Director of the Steel Division of the voestalpine Group, explained at a press conference in Linz.

TransANT offers a payload advantage of up to four tonnes per wagon – also thanks to the 20 percent lighter carriage. The standard platform is available in different lengths between 33 and 70 feet, the modular superstructures are available in various industry-specific versions. The body changes thus allow to adapt to different logistical customer requirements.

In contrast to other modular equipment concepts, TransANT can also be used with superstructures in conventional single wagon transport without restrictions. The intelligent interface between superstructure and carrying wagon enables roll-off carrying capacity and the carrying wagon can be used as a container carrying wagon for intermodal transport without superstructure. The preparation for automatic coupling ensures future optimisation and automation of railway operations.
