Gebrüder Weiss investing EUR 1 million in southern Germany

The international transport and logistics company Gebrüder Weiss is expanding its logistics terminal in Wernau near Esslingen/Stuttgart. With the ground-breaking ceremony, construction work on a new hall was officially commenced on August 2. In order to meet the increased demand for storage solutions, the logistics complex, so far covering 6,000 m², will be expanded to 7,100 m². The pallet shelving warehouse, the block storage warehouse and the picking area are being expanded, resulting in 11,000 pallet bays and 3,000 m² in the block storage warehouse. In addition, three new loading gates will be added. Gebrüder Weiss is investing one million euros in the expansion of the terminal, which is due to be completed by the end of the year.

Jochen Gonser, Branch Manager Gebrüder Weiss Esslingen: “By expanding the location, we are responding to the high demand for logistics services in southern Germany and, at the same time, pursuing our strategy of efficiently combining transport logistics with inventory management. Plans are already being made to further expand our activities in the region.” For one, the Wernau site is located directly on the A8 and therefore easy to reach. On the other hand, the proximity to the Esslingen branch enables a direct connection to Gebrüder Weiss’ pan-European land transport network.

In Wernau, Gebrüder Weiss stores automotive sensors, electrical appliances and metal goods, among other things, for its customers. “The security of the goods is our top priority, which is why we value a reliable anti-theft system,” says Gonser. In addition to storage and order picking, the location also offers customers an important gate function for transports to Eastern Europe, where Gebrüder Weiss has its own extensive network of locations. Around 30 employees are currently employed in Wernau. The plan is to increase the number of staff employed there following the expansion.

With about 7,000 employees, 150 company-owned locations and an annual turnover of EUR 1.55 billion (2017), Gebrüder Weiss ranks among Europe’s leading transport and logistics companies. In addition to its core business of land transport, air & sea freight, and logistics, the company operates a number of highly specialized industry solutions and subsidiaries under the umbrella of Gebrüder Weiss Holding AG, based in Lauterach (Austria). These include the logistics consultancy firm x|vise, tectraxx (industry specialist for hi-tech businesses), dicall (communications solutions, market research, training), Rail Cargo (railway transports) and the Gebrüder Weiss parcel service GWP, co-partner of the Austrian company DPD.
