Austria is investing into environmentally friendly cargo transport

Apart from being a major European transport corridor, the Danube river is also a source of energy and a valuable habitat for millions of people. Taking account of this, the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) launches the campaign „Aktionsprogramm Donau“, also setting new standards for the shipping industry, ecology and flood protection. Until 2022 almost EUR 12 million will be provided to upgrade Austria’s most important waterway and adjusting it to numerous aspects of supra-regional programs, such as the EU Strategy for the Danube Region.
The European peaks in freight transport by rail speak for themselves”, says Alois Stöger, Minister of Infrastructure, drawing a positive balance for 2015. Every year bmvit invests more than EUR 2 billion into rail infrastructure, making the railway a real alternative to road transport.
The development of more efficient and safer road infrastructure was successfully continued in the year 2015. In total bmvit invests EUR 1 billion per year to improve the primary road network in Austria.
Road, rail, air, Danube waterway, including flood protection, broadband expansion and research funding – the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) invests around EUR 5 billion per year into infrastructure in Austria. “With these investments into the future, we connect people with each other, the industry and people, and Austria to the whole world. The bmvit is a growth engine for our economy and secures more than 80,000 jobs every year,” said Stöger.
