The Bremen ports have significantly improved their climate balance. Over the past eight years, emissions have been reduced by 70 percent. The goal is to make the port infrastructure fully CO2-neutral by the end of 2023. The Senator of Science and Ports, Dr. Claudia Schilling says: “The ports are the engine of Bremen’s economy. On in five jobs in the state depends on them, which is all the more a reason for me to be pleased that it is possible to drive the ports forward also in terms of climate policy”.

The SHARC research project is important for reducing emissions. Since the beginning of this year, Siemens AG, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Technical University of Berlin and the Institute for Environmental Services at Bremen University of Applied Sciences have been working on a “Smart Port Application Concept for the Integration of Renewable Energies” under the coordination of bremenports.

The conception phase will end in September 2020. A concrete implementation is planned from 2021 to 2025. Claudia Schilling: “This project makes the link between science and ports very clear. Only with a strong scientific landscape can we achieve our ambitious goals”.
