20 years of wine logistics with DPD Austria

Special cardboard boxes for shipping wine, sparkling wine or Champaign ensure safety for worldwide wine distribution

20 years of wine logistics with DPD Austria

In 1996, DPD Austria has laid the foundation for wine logistics in Austria. Today, about 2,000 Austrian winemakers count among the regular customers, for whom the private parcel company is sending the fine products to about 230 countries.

“The story of our success started 20 years ago, with about 50,000 wine boxes per year and a handful of winemakers who were our customers. Today we are shipping about 350,000 boxes per year, with a rising trend. We are seeing annual growth rates of 15 percent or more“, Rainer Schwarz, Managing Director DPD Austria, outlines the positive development, and adds: Many of Austria’s top winemakers have confidence in us, because we are offering special cardboard packaging, that were specially developed for the shipment of fragile products such as wine, sparkling wine or Champaign. In addition, we offer our customers to brand their cardboard boxes.“

According to their own indications DPD had the widest offer of cardboard boxes for wine shipping in Austria, which were designed for shipping bottles and audited by the Austrian Institute of Packaging (Österreichisches Institut für Verpackungswesen). The regular customers include reputable winemakers from all Austrian wine growing regions – among them Szigeti and Umathum in Burgenland, Hagn and Markowitsch in Lower Austria, Sabathi in Styria and Wieninger in Vienna.

“The secret of our success is a good link to our customers, which we want to consolidate even in times of e-commerce. Not least the way and time of the transport have their influence on the quality of the wine.

Therefore, we have been cooperating with DPD as our shipping partner for many years. The special safety boxes and the strong, international network allow our quality wines to arrive fast and safe at our customers around the world,” says Ariane Umathum, CEO of the eponymous winery in Frauenkirchen, Burgenland on cooperating with DPD.
