Minus 70 per cent of CO2 emissions and minus 40 per cent of energy consumption –  this positive balance sheet of successful sustainability management was reported by the Vienna Airport in its updated sustainability reporting. The ambitious goal: By 2030, the airport wants to achieve CO2 neutrality, despite further growth. In order to achieve this goal, they are working consistently on the eco-program:

Further improvement of energy efficiency

Use of CO2-free energy sources

Switch to electric mobility on the apron

Expansion of geothermal energy for heating, cooling and photovoltaic use

Increase the use of public transport and upgrade the train to Bratislava

More burden on louder aircraft – new noise fee model

Conversion of lighting systems to LED

“Sustainability and energy efficiency have been top priorities for us since 2011, and our comprehensive sustainability management across all divisions enables us to achieve our goal of becoming one of the first CO2 neutral major airports by 2030.  For us, climate protection is not a lip service, but lived, daily practice,” emphasised Flughafen Wien AG board member Günther Ofner at a press conference.   And added: “The climate is only helped by concrete measures, but not biased blame or symbolic politics. At the political level, the rapid implementation of the Single European Sky for air traffic control would be a priority action, saving more than 10 per cent of kerosene but also reducing delays and congestion. What is especially urgent is the railway construction towards Bratislava.”

In August of this year, the fourth photovoltaic system covering 8,000 m² will go into operation. As a result, the total area of PV systems at the Vienna Airport area will increase to 23,700 m². Each year around 1.8 million kilowatt hours are produced. This could cover the annual electricity demand of about 600 households. The plans for the fifth photovoltaic system are in full swing.
