In 2019, ÖBB Infrastruktur AG, which is operating eight intermodal road-rail terminals, is aiming to continue its strategy to create more customer benefits. The marketing of terminal logistics services, such as stuffing, repairs, temporary storage and cross docking, will continue to be pushed forward and digitised processes will optimise the throughput times of shipments at the individual sites, announced the head of the Terminal Service Austria (TSA) business unit, Renate Glisic on May 15 in front of customers and business partners.
In 2018, TSA achieved a 6.1% increase in unaccompanied combined transport to 504,601 ITU (intermodal transport units). Rolling Highway saw more than 300,000 trucks entering and leaving the terminal, which is a slight decline on 2017.
Since 2012, ÖBB Infrastruktur has invested around EUR 400 million to expand its terminals. These include the projects to build or expand the cargo centres Güterzentrum Wien Süd and Güterzentrum Wolfurt, the repair centre Reparaturkompetenzzentrum St. Michael in Upper Styria and Wels Terminal. According to a press release, the maximum throughput capacity is approximately 775,000 containers and the maximum storage capacity in the unaccompanied combined transport segment is 14,200 TEU. The basic equipment of the terminals includes seven gantry cranes and 16 container handlers.
Renate Glisic and Dr. Ing. Johann Pluy, Member of the Management Board of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, announced plans to increase the capacity of currently around 200,000 ITU by another 100,000 ITU. For this purpose, the purchase of reach stackers is planned.
Since the beginning of the year, the Villach terminal has served as a dry port in the hinterland of Trieste. In addition, TSA is working on a web application for locating containers throughout Austria.
In addition to services such as transshipment, transfer service for trains, warehousing/interim storage of ITU, empty container depot and container repair, state-of-the-art IT software is available at the terminals of ÖBB Infrastruktur AG. In the previous year, a total of 170,000 ITU ingoing and outgoing were handled of the Vienna South Terminal. In May, the site was expanded by around 20,000 m² – including an empty container depot for the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The doubling of transshipment capacity and quadrupling of the storage capacity at the Wolfurt unaccompanied combined transport terminal, which was done in three phases, was completed in October 2018.
Terminal Service Austria is a neutral service provider in the intermodal transport chain for freight forwarders, operators, rail freight companies and shipping companies. The division includes 243 employees, who generated sales of EUR 20 million in 2018.
