Switzerland: UID number mandatory for customs clearance

As of January 1, 2016, customs declarations in Switzerland will only be able to be processed if they are accompanied by the UID number (enterprise identification number) of the Swiss importer or exporter. This corresponds to the procedure in the EU, where the EORI number is required. All tax-related numbers and registration numbers for enterprises in Switzerland will be gradually replaced by the universal UID number.

To avoid difficulties when exporting goods to Switzerland, the Swiss importer’s UID number should be provided to the service provider that is undertaking to have the goods cleared by Swiss customs authorities. Depending on the terms of delivery, this may be the responsibility of the exporter. It is therefore being recommended that the Swiss importer’s UID number be stated on the exporter’s invoice.

Unlike with the EORI number, there is no transitional implementation period. Private individuals are exempt from this requirement.
