SBB Cargo ends 2015 with losses of CHF 22 million

Presenting the annual results of minus CHF 22 million (previous year: CHF 33 million), in 2015 SBB Cargo was not able to repeat its positive results from the two previous years. “The strong Swiss franc, economic downturn and the increasing deindustrialisation burdened the results at the amount of around CHF 35 million. Thanks to saving and efficiency measures in the second half of the year results were balanced“, SBB states in a press information.

Against this background, the one-in-a-century construction project, the new Gotthard tunnel, casts its shadow. On 1 June 2016, the 57 kilometres and hence the world’s longest railway tunnel will be officially inaugurated. Start of operation is planned with the change of the schedules on 10/11 December. Cargo transport will profit from a prognosticated 59 per cent increase in transport capacity by 2030. Travel time between Zurich and Milano will be reduced by 30 minutes, to 60 minutes from 2020.
