Salzburg AG is on the verge of a retrograde withdrawal from rail freight transport. In the previous week, the management announced to the employees the discontinuation of the service of partial routes.

The connecting railway Maxglan with hop deliveries for Stiegl and waste paper transports for Papyrus will be discontinued at the end of 2020. The shuttle service from Liefering to Hüttau v.v. for transports on behalf of Kaindl Flooring GmbH is also about to be discontinued. The connecting railway of AustroCel Hallein GmbH with a shunting capacity of around 7,000 wagons per year has been operated by SETG (operated by S-Rail) since the beginning of the year.

The gradual withdrawal from rail freight transport is primarily justified by economic considerations. Continued operation on the sections of the line would require major investments in the vehicle fleet. This would make economic operation no longer feasible in the medium and long term, reports the “Salzburger Nachrichten” in its weekend edition.

The main line of the Salzburger Lokalbahn between Salzburg and Lamprechtshausen/Ostermiething will continue to be operated with electric locomotives without restrictions. In 2018, Salzburg AG’s transport volume in rail freight traffic was around 2.9 million tons.
