Revival of rail freight transport in the Austrian Weinviertel

Regiobahn (Lower Austria) and VTG support RWA and Lagerhaus-companies in export to Italy by rail

Revival of rail freight transport in the Austrian Weinviertel

VTG Aktiengesellschaft, a private wagon hire and rail logistics company, and Regiobahn (Weinviertel, Lower Austria) offered Raiffeisen Ware Austria (RWA) in 2017, to utilise loading points that are no longer served by ÖBB, to form trains for exports to Italy. This means wagons are filled at Lagerhaus sites on a railway line to form a train. Wiener Lokalbahn takes them to the state border. This is where private Italian rail provider takes them over and transports them to the recipients.
After activating a railway line near Mistelbach in January 2018, the regions of Korneuburg and Hollabrunn followed. Trains have been operated again in the region of Weitersfeld since the beginning of October. Currently every two weeks a train with 20 wagons (1,200 t of grain) is sent to Italy. The annual amount ranges between 80,000 and 130,000 tonnes.

“The new partners enable us to double the quantity of grain that we transport to Italy by rail in the medium term,” says Claudia Masolino, RWA manager for rail logistics in Italy. Services on further railway lines are planned.
