“Reinforcement“ for rail cargo traffic on the Pyhrn route

Offering additional shunting services on the route section between Seltzhal and Spital am Pyhrn, the Austrian Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are responding to the demand of the logistics industry and Styria’s economy.
Operating an additional locomotive, charged at a flat rate of EUR 330 per service unit, ÖBB-Infrastruktur-AG is implementing a major target of the bmvit and thus improves the competitiveness of the railway compared with road transport on the Pyhrn route. “This will ease the cargo shift to the railway and also increase the utilisation of our rail infrastructure without any additional financial burdens for tax-payers “, Alois Stöger, Minister of Infrastructure, is pleased.
The additional traction services for shunting on the route section between Selzthal – Spital/Pyhrn, south- and northwards, are available in the product portfolio from 1 July, open to all railway operators. One service unit comprises an electric locomotive and a driver on the defined route section, including potential supply and return of ordered resources, but no energy costs for the defined route section.
In a press release the Austrian Chamber of Commerce welcomed the additional offer for shunting services on the sector between Seltzhal and Spital am Pyhrn. These modified services offered by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG will also enable private railway companies to use this transalpine rail freight connection on fair terms. Until now this was only possible at high costs and with organisational effort for additional shunting locomotives, Dr. Thomas Scheiber, Chairman of the professional association of the railways, writes in a press release.
