Port of Vienna is the new “hotspot” for heavy cargo handling

Total investment of EUR 1 million: Felbermayr Group (Wels) and the Port of Vienna open new heavy cargo hub in the port of Albern

The Port of Vienna has taken another step to position its location as a high performance, trimodal logistics hub at the Danube river. The new heavy cargo hub at the area of the port of Albern has started operation on 17 June. The facility is based on a cooperation of the Port of Vienna and heavy haulage specialsit Felbermayr.
“In the new heavy cargo hub we can handle cargo pieces of up to 450 tonnes in regular operation,” said Fritz Lehr, Chief Financial Officer of the Port of Vienna. “The 4,000 m² area built on customer requirements with ideal transport connection and the ultramodern equipment of the high & heavy specialist Felbermayr allow for particularly heavy lifts and hence handling oversized cargo.”
The first high & heavy transport has been handled in the presence of numerous invited guests: a 24-meters and 382-tonnes tubular module for desulphurisation of a transport ship was loaded to a special carrier, which carries the “steel colossus” to the OMV refinery in Schwechat this weekend. “The new heavy cargo hub and the cooperation with Felbermayr confirmed once again the attractiveness of the Danube waterway, and that inland waterway transport definitely has a bright future. Apart from bulk and general cargo also very large and heavy goods can be transported more environmentally friendly and cost efficient and on the ship,” said Karin Zipperer, Technical Managing Director at Port of Vienna.
Felbermayr Holding GmbH with headquarters in Wels, Austria has 78 locations in 17 countries in Europe. 2,800 employees generated net sales of EUR 545 million in 2014. The company specialises in oversized and heavy cargo transport, rental of cranes and lifting platforms as well as building and civil engineering activities.
