Port of Hamburg: As many as 100 weekly trains to/from Austria

The positive development of container transhipment in the port of Hamburg is also benficial to Austria: the conversion of four transatlantic services of the shipping alliance “THE Alliance” to Hamburg enables the rail operators Metrans, IMS and Rail Cargo Austria to offer a total of eight more trains a week.
 
Currently, 100 block trains per week connect the terminals in Austria with the quays in the Port of Hamburg. At the beginning of 2019, there were 92 departures from and to Wolfurt, Hall in Tyrol, Salzburg, Linz, Enns, Krems, WienCont Freudenau and Wien Süd with further connections to national and international traffic.
 
“Austria traditionally has very strong traffic flows when exporting to the USA”, says Alexander Till, Head of the Representative Office of Hafen Hamburg Marketing (HHM) in Vienna. “This makes the conversion of THE Alliance’s services from Bremerhaven to Hamburg particularly noticeable here. Customer feedback on the larger number of trains has been very positive”.
 
In 2018, 135.1 million tonnes of cargo, including around 8.7 million TEU, passed the quaysides of Germany’s largest seaport. Hamburg is thus the third largest container port in Europe and ranks 19th in the list of the world’s largest container ports.
