Operating license for Bombardier TRAXX AC3 Last Mile Locomotive with additional diesel engine in Germany

New logistics systems with Bombardier TRAXX AC3 Last Mile Locomotive

Rail technology provider Bombardier Transportation has received the approval to operate the Bombardier TRAXX AC3 Last Mile Locomotive in Germany. The vehicle received the official operating license from the German Federal Railway Authority (EBA) on 17 December 2015.
Ulrich Jochem, Head of Locomotives at Bombardier Transportation: “The approval by the German Railway Authority is a milestone for the delivery and operation of the TRAXX AC3 Last Mile Locomotive in Central Europe, which allows implementing innovative logistics systems.”
The Last Mile function of the TRAXX locomotive is based on an innovative additional diesel engine and a battery, which enables this electrical locomotive also to drive on non-electrified track segments.
This is particularly advantageous for infrastructure such as ports, terminals, warehousing areas or industrial sites, where often diesel locomotives must be used for shunting operations on the non-electrified “last mile” the tracks.
According to the manufacturer, the TRAXX AC Last Mile Locomotives are efficient and environmentally friendly. The diesel engines are only used if necessary, and are free of emissions when run on battery.
Bombardier has received more than 240 orders to supply variations of the TRAXX AC3 Last Mile Locomotive. The locomotive has several certifications according to the TSI-requirements (technical specifications for interoperability).
