As part of its global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is also making major efforts in Germany. As one of these measures, the empty container logistics for the supply of the Bremen locations was changed to inland water vessel.

Instead of mastering the 75-kilometer route between Bremen and Bremerhaven by truck, a concept was developed in collaboration with MSC Gate and the Rhenus Group to transport these containers in regular traffic by inland vessel and thereby optimize the capacity utilization of the ships. This measure can save around 10 tonnes of CO2 every month and thus make a significant contribution to climate protection.

This saving corresponds approximately to the output of a road transport of 50 containers on the same route. MSC says it will continue to work on saving potentials for greenhouse gases along the transport chain to transform them into a sustainable one, in particular by promoting multimodal transport.
