The Salzburg-based company Eisenwerk Sulzau-Werfen (ESW), one of the global leaders in the production of high-tech rollers made of steel, are pleased with a major order ex China. Meishan Steel is one of the leading steel producers in China and ordered 30 rollers weighing 15 tons each with ESW. The order volume for the family enterprise in the Pongau amounts to about EUR 1,7 million.
“We constantly handle exports to places all over the world but what made this order unique was the urgency and the air transport needed for it. The rollers had to be produced at short notice and transported to China within a couple of days in some instances”, ESW sales manager Hubertus Weinberger said. “The transport was carried out by a Boeing 747/800 so that the rollers arrived at their destination within 48 hours. The standard transport by ship would have taken about three to four weeks.
The rollers were produced in the plant in Tenneck, furnished with an anti-corrosive coating and packed in especially manufactured wooden boxes. By truck they were then transported from the Pongau to Luxemburg and from there by plane directly to Shanghai. “Such a logistical challenge can only be undertaken with the right forwarding partners and our highly qualified staff in the back office and in the field”, emphasises Hubertus Weinberger.
The ESW rollers are used in the production of flat products. With this process the steel slabs are heated to reach 1.000 °C and from a thickness of 20 cm at the beginning of the process they are then rolled into a sheet with a thickness of 1 mm. The company in Salzburg produces and delivers to rollers necessary for this process and is one of the leading manufacturers in this field.
The ESW turnover in the headquarters in Tenneck in the Pongau increased by almost five per cent to more than EUR 66 million, the export quota is 98 per cent. The iron plant registers growth especially in North and South America but also in the highly contested Asian market. For some years, China has not been an easy market for foreign manufacturers as the local demand is primarily met by national manufacturers.
