High-ranking industrial delegation from Austria visiting Hamburg

Alexander Till: “The response among the Austrian participants is so positive that we will repeat this study visit for sure.”

High-ranking industrial delegation from Austria visiting Hamburg

On 22 and 23 June, a high-ranking industry delegation from Austria visited the Port of Hamburg. During the two-day study visit the business representatives were informed about the handling processes at the powerful container and multi-purpose terminals in Germany’s largest seaport. Sopecialist lectures by respresentatives of the shipping companies, a visit to Lufthansa Technik and a port tour completed the interesting program.
The delegation was organised by the Vienna marketing representative of the Port of Hamburg for the first time together with the Association of Industrialists headed by Mag. Peter Koren, Deputy Director General and Mag. Monika Schuh, Managing Director of Infrastructure Committee. They also invited to a dinner in the Hamburg Hafenklub, together with representatives of Hamburg’s port industry and the metropolitan region. In his speech Peter Koren stressed on Austria’s export strength and the importance of Hamburg for the Austrian economy.
The managing directors and logistics managers from the sectors ofvehicle technology, timber, shuttering systems, crane building, cableway construction, tubular systems, electronic wholesale and logistics, as well as the Managing Director of the handling terminals in Vienna and Linz were quite impressed by the high degree of automatisation at the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). During the tour with Thomas Funk, Sales Director, the participants were particularly interested in the processes their foreign trade goods take on the terminal before they are loaded or unloaded to or from a container ship.
For foreign trade in Austria, Hamburg is the most important transshipment port for container traffic. The combined transport terminals in Austria are connected by high-frequency direct train connections to the intermodal terminals in the Port of Hamburg. Around 295,000 TEU were transported to and from Austria on the railway via Hamburg in 2015.
The export goods were dominated by machinery, paper, wood, chemical products, food, iron and steel. The Austrian imports via the Elbe port are dominated by electrical products, food, beverages and tobacco, textiles and other manufactured goods.
