Hamburg’s port railway is ready for 835 metres trains

Longer cargo trains to increase capacity and efficiency of railway transport in the hinterland of maritime ports

Hamburg’s port railway is ready for 835 metres trains

From 13 December 2015 a new attractive offer is available to carriers in the Port of Hamburg: The tracks of the port railway can be accessed by trains of a total length of 835 metres, instead of previously 740 metres.
This becomes possible through a joint project of Hamburg Port Authority
(HPA) and DB Netz AG, giving the Port of Hamburg access to the route from Maschen to Padborg, Denmark. Like in Denmark, this route is available to 835 metres trains already today.
Calling the Port of Hamburg with 835 metres trains increases the capacity and efficiency of railway transport in the hinterland of maritime ports“, explains Stefan Kirch, Cargo Sales Manager DB Netz AG.
This improved connection will be a benefit to the port location as well as to the customers and end customers of railway cargo transport. At the same time this increases the competitiveness of the railway as a transport mode.“
Opening the tracks for 835 metres trains strengthens the railway traffic in the Port of Hamburg. We are happy to be able to offer our customers a real added value – without any additional costs for them“, says Harald Kreft, Manager of the port railway at HPA.
HPA and DB Netz AG have been jointly working to establish the conditions for regular operations with longer trains since 2014. They had to check safety and operational issues, such as signal distances and circuits of railroad crossings. Following the entry of the required expert opinions at the Federal Railway Authority and the State Railway Inspectorate of Hamburg, the cooperation was successfully completed and the Hamburg port railway is ready for longer freight trains.
