In the presence of Shanghai Party Secretary LI Qiang, Hamburg’s First Mayor, Peter Tschentscher and Shanghai Vice Mayor XU Kunlin signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between Hamburg and Shanghai for the years 2019/2020 on August 27. In addition to deepening cooperation in business and science, both partner cities want to cooperate more closely in the future with regard to digital urban development. Shanghai was invited to become partner city of the Port Anniversary in 2021.

Mayor Peter Tschentscher: “Hamburg and Shanghai both have a centuries-old history. They are no museum cities nonetheless, but dynamic, modern metropolises with a confident view of the future. They face similar challenges: to improve climate protection and mobility in their urban centers and to positively shape the digital transformation of our society.”

Hamburg’s trade relations with China date back to the 18th century and are today more alive than ever. In 2018, around 2.6 million TEU were handled in Chinese traffic in the port of Hamburg.

As the traditional center of the European-Chinese trade, Hamburg is a hub of the maritime and also the landside Silk Road. More than 200 weekly train connections connect Hamburg to almost 30 cities in China. With over 550 resident Chinese companies, Hamburg is China’s leading location in Europe.
