GLS Austria delivers packages via bicycle

Since the beginning of the year, GLS emphasizes low-emission parcel delivery with a load bicycle in the town center of Graz

GLS Austria delivers packages via bicycle

With the use of the load bicycle, GLS improves the delivery process since the bike with electric pedal assistance can also drive in narrow streets or house passes up to the entrance of the store. Up to 70 stops per day are possible. This requires a multiple loading at the location of the bicycle near the city center. This is also where the parcels are handed over from the delivery truck, which arrives in the morning from the GLS depot in Unterpremstätten.
For pedestrians, cyclists and motorists the use of load bicycles in downtown compared to conventional delivery vehicles is also more comfortable and secure. Furthermore, the delivery via e-bike is economical due to its fuel efficiency. The nocturnal battery charge is sufficient for the entire day.
The load bicycle of GLS is not only more environmentally friendly, but also more flexible and easier to park. “The requirements in the parcel logistics are constantly changing,” says Dr. Axel Spörl region manager GLS Austria and Portugal. “Therefore, we drive forward innovations while paying attention to sustainability, in particular environmental protection. Based on the positive experiences we want to quickly deploy up to ten other load bicycles in Graz” explains Spörl. “Thereby we can waive about six diesel vehicles.” In addition, GLS still launch delivery with electric cars in Vienna, Linz and Salzburg in the current financial year.
The commitment of GLS Austria is part of the group-wide environmental initiative ThinkGreen. In the course of this initiative, the GLS Group promotes among other things alternative fuels to reduce pollution and emissions. GLS Group’s Environmental Management System is certified to the internationally recognized ISO 14001 standard.
