“Dry Port” for a new Silk Road via Carinthia

The “Logistic Center Austria South” is the current project for the logistics location Alplog-Villach-Fürnitz in Carinthia. During the meeting of the Government of Carinthia, five government officials jointly filed an application for the establishment of an operator company – which was adopted unanimously. The company will be held by the public authorities by 100 percent; EUR 2 million will be available for a period of five years, according to Carinthia’s Governor Peter Kaiser. He expects many new jobs and a strong future potential for Carinthia.

“More and more people are increasingly shopping on the Internet. The goods are produced around the world and have to be transported to the consumers,” says Kaiser. The Governor sees the Logistic Center Austria South as a potential hub for a new, modern Silk Road.

The “Logistic Center Austria South” project planning involves also the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor, as well as existing infrastructure such as the Klagenfurt airport. They had already positive negotiations among others with the Adriatic ports, the Port of Duisburg, ÖBB and Jörg Leichtfried, Austrian Minister of Infrastructure. They are even in contact with representatives of China Shipping. Also for research and education the Governor also sees many opportunities connected with the logistics center.
