Coke on the railway: Innovative logistics system with voestalpine in Leoben/Donawitz

On 3 November an innovative unloading station for coke started operation at the voestalpine site in Leoben/Donawitz. On the occassion of the opening ceremony Christian Kern (CEO ÖBB Holding AG), Reinhard Bamberger (CEO Rail Cargo Group), Franz Kainersdorfer (Member of the Board voestalpine AG and Head of the Metal Engineering Division of the voestalpine group), Christian Hackl (Geschäftsführer voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH) and Bernhard Grentner (Geschäftsführer Innofreight) presented the details of their cooperation.
The joint development of voestalpine, Innofreight and Rail Cargo Group ensures the future raw material supply of the two furnaces at the voestalpine site in Upper Styria. The lightweight container wagons of Rail Cargo Group, combined with the Innofreight container system, allow to increase the load capacity per block train by about 30 per cent. The container tilting system ensures a process-reliable winter operation, even at very low temperatures.

The new logistics system makes the development potential and the railway’s capacity for innovation visible. We make a contribution against Europe’s deindustrialisation, save some jobs and strengthen Styria as a business location. ”
The new coke unloading system allows a 100% delivery of the raw material arriving by rail at the site in Donawitz. The operation is semi-automatic, thus ensuring a simplified handling, less efforts for employees and increased work safety.
The new container system, coupled with the modern unloading system optimises delivery and collection; discharge is accelerated and security of supply improved.
