With ambitious projects for the quayside, terminal construction and port railway, we back up the future of our ports,” Martin Günthner, Bremen’s Economic and Port Senator said to journalists in Hamburg on 14 December. At the same time he announced preliminary turnover figures for 2015. Accordingly, the cargo throughput in the two-city state will decline by 4.8 per cent this year. A total throughput performance of
74.5 million tonnes can be expected (2014: 78.2 million tonnes).
“The economic problems in many parts of the world have a direct impact on our business in the port,” said Martin Günthner. As examples, he cited the economic slowdown in China, the collapse of the Russian trade and the fall in demand for goods in emerging markets.
At the Weser the 2015 result suffered particularly from a weaker development in the cargo segment. Throughput results of about 64.7 million tonnes (down 6.0 per cent) are anticipated. The conventional cargo reaches about 8.6 million tonnes (down 4.2 per cent), while containerized cargo is expected to show a decrease of 6.3 per cent to
56.2 million tonnes. Based on standard containers (TEU), a throughput of
5.6 million TEU is anticipated for Bremerhaven (down 3.6 per cent). The slighter decline in the handling of standard containers is based on an increase in the number of empty containers.
However, the Senator was satisfied with the development in automotive logistics. The handling of vehicles in 2015 remained on last year’s level at about 2.2 million units. About 40,000 fewer vehicles will be handled than in the record year 2014.
The focus of the current investments in the Bremen ports is the EUR 180 million-project Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven (OTB). “The new port facility is urgently needed in order to promote and secure the development of Bremerhaven as an industrial and logistics centre and as the leading centre of offshore wind power,” Martin Günthner said.
Another EUR 30 million will be invested in the expansion of the port railway in Bremerhaven. The Imsumer dike area of the railway station will be expanded in the coming years from 8 to 16 parallel rail tracks.
Decided a few days ago, the renovation of the quay in the Bremerhaven Kaiserhafen III means an additional strengthening of the maritime location. For EUR 32.7 million, the western quays of the port basin will be renewed by the end of 2017.
