Trade conflicts, climate change and digitisation are today’s challenges from the point of view of a seaport. All together also affects the processes in the global supply chains, agreed the participants in a panel discussion on two events in the “logistics talk” series, organised by bremenports on September 26th at the Cargo Center Graz and in the Saturn Tower in Vienna.

At the two events, numerous representatives of Austrian freight forwarders, shipping companies, container operators and rail freight companies were presented with the most recently implemented or planned projects for solving the challenges of port infrastructure and hinterland traffic. 85 percent of new vehicle logistics and more than 50 percent of container shipping in the hinterland is implemented by rail.

Stefano Cotugno of Schenker & Co AG wishes for an improvement in the offering of Far East liner services from and to the ports of Bremen. At present, the America lines are predominating the container segment. This would make it easier for railway operators to organise and handle rotations by rail.

Austria remained a major market for the Bremen port industry also in 2018. 1.8 million tonnes of goods with loading points or final destinations in Austria passed the quays in Bremen and Bremerhaven. This represents an increase of 5.1 percent compared to the previous year.

At 1.6 million tonnes, the Austrian sea freight market via Bremen / Bremenhaven was strongly influenced by exports in this period – as in previous years. Container shipments to and from Austria amounted to 172,000 TEUs (+ 5%) in the reporting period. Every week, more than 60 block trains operate between the container terminals in Austria and the ports of Bremen.
