The cargo segment of all Austrian airports is currently in a process of consolidation with freight numbers stagnating or decreasing. This was also true for Salzburg Airport, where approximately 9,000 tonnes of cargo were handled last year. Their focus was to better use the available scheduled and charter flights for transporting cargo.
2017 and 2018 had been successful years for the airport, with double-digit growth. Now Salzburg Airport has to face a 18.6 per cent decline in cargo volume, compared with 2018.
The future of airfreight in Salzburg lies in value-added-services such as collection, labelling, packaging, DGR-check, filling and screening. When a new product was launched, reduction of carbon dioxide emissions played an essential role: a daily truck from Salzburg to Vienna. Central consolidation of all partners allowed to reduce truck journeys and thereby avoid 126 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

After a quite cost-intensive year 2019, it is important to
make investments only if there are no other options.
“The biggest part of the investments in 2020 will be EUR 2.3 million for
purchasing new vehicles and equipment. About EUR 2.4 million will be needed for
infrastructural measures and various smaller projects”, says Deputy Governor
Christian Stöckl.
“The rest of the investment volume will be divided as follows: IT hardware and software (EUR 736.000), environmental measures in the cargo building (EUR 480:000), implementation of bag-drop-services (EUR 440.000) and the replacement of outdated technology (conversion to LED lighting) and so on”, he adds.
Nearly 1.500 people work at Austria´s largest regional airport. Salzburg Airport offers high quality and essential transport infrastructure to industry and tourism of this region. “In order to stay competitive today, you need to be mobile. Therefore globally operating companies need an airport and good flight connections right at their front door”, says Christian Stöckl.
