WienCont: 40 years of expertise in intermodal logistics

The port of Vienna Freudenau shows strong growth; this year, the mark of 100 trains per week is to be reached
For WienCont’s Managing Director Harald Jony, the company has undergone a transformation into a specialist and all-rounder in the past few years. “What we do, we do in first-class quality. Where there is room for improvement, we tackle things promptly,” that’s his motto. The result of these efforts is the introduction of a new terminal management system, accompanied by accelerated truck handling.

In the transshipment and depot division, with a capacity for 10,000 containers, trade and repair, WienCont will see a significant increase in volumes this year. After 350,000 TEU in 2018, there was an increase of 6 per cent for the period from January to June.

“Ideally, we could achieve growth in the double-digit percentage range,” says Hafen Wien’s Managing Director Doris Pulker-Rohrhofer. The location benefits from the approximately equally strong pillars in the segment of continental rail traffic and maritime operations.

The latter are clearly aimed at the connections to the North and West ports. With four tracks under three crane bridges and three further track systems with one operation via reachstacker, WienCont is the largest container terminal in Austria according to its own statements. Doris Pulker-Rohrhofer estimates the currently available annual capacity of 700,000 TEU.

Taking into account the new subsidiary Fehringer Technical Services, the company employs just under 100 people, who generated sales of EUR 11.5 million in 2018. With this team, the management strives for continuous and sustainable growth over the next few years. The hopes rest on the one hand on the extension of the trailer trains and on the other hand on the establishment of strong train products along the Baltic-Adriatic-Balkan corridor with the key countries Poland and Turkey.
