For Stiegl, Austria’s leading private brewery, the new E-trucks of Quehenberger Logistics are now rolling through the city of Salzburg. The zero-emission vehicles support the existing fleet of biodiesel-powered EURO-6 vehicles and two horse-drawn carriages that are in deployed around the brewery.
“Electric vehicles are ideal for urban distribution traffic,” says Christian Fürstaller, CEO at Quehenberger Logistics. The 26-tonne truck with a 264 kW electric motor (equivalent to 320 hp) and a maximum range of 180 kilometers is predestined for city traffic. “Eliminating noise pollution enables the use of alternative transport concepts such as increased overnight delivery,” said Fürstaller.
“We expect to save around 16,000 kg of CO₂ per year by using an electric truck,” explains Stiegl’s CEO Thomas Gerbl. “As we wanted to know exactly how much we can save, together with the sustainability professionals of denkstatt we have determined our CO₂ footprint per liter of beer. Thanks to our recycling approach, we have been able to reduce our CO₂ emissions by around 30 per cent to 232 g CO₂.” says Gerbl.
The e-truck from MAN will be ready for series production by 2022. Until then it will be tested in three cities (Salzburg, Graz and Vienna). For Stiegl, which was the first brewery to commission an e-truck, using more e-trucks, e.g. in cities such as Vienna is also of interest.
