The green license plate for exhaust-free vehicles is now also available for large electric trucks and exhaust-free buses. This required a change in the Act on Motor Vehicles, which became effective by August.
“E-trucks can deliver quietly and cleanly. This helps us to protect the environment and strengthen the economy. Moreover, according to studies e-mobility creates up to 30,000 new jobs in Austria,” says Jörg Leichtfried, Minister of Transport.
At present, a total of 1,618 small electric trucks and 164 e-buses are registered in Austria. In September, the MAN truck manufacturer will start producing large e-trucks in Steyr. Inititally the company will cooperate with large trading chains during a test period. From 2021, several thousand electric trucks will be built each year in Steyr
Newly registered e-trucks of the N2 and N3 vehicle classes, as well as e-buses of the M2 and M3 vehicle classes will automatically receive the green licence plate. On request, however, also a conventional licence plate can be requested. Owners of already registered e-trucks can exchange the old licence plate at the registration office. The change is not obligatory.
The authorities have issued 6,944 number plates for electric vehicles since the green licence plates were introduced. E-cars with a green licence plate are exempt from the parking fee in Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Wels, Linz, Graz, Mödling, Zell am See, Klosterneuburg and Krems.
