RCG brings on track wooden houses of Stora Enso

As Central Europe’s biggest timber carrier, the Rail Cargo Group provides innovative transport solutions for round and sawn timber, and wood as containerised cargo. Also Stora Enso Wood Products, a leading provider of sustainable solutions for building and residential purposes, relies on the expertise of the Rail Cargo Group. The company delivers single-family homes, student residences, library buildings, kindergartens or multi-storey buildings made from the solid wood product “CLT” (Cross Laminated Timber) to Norway.

The Rail Cargo Group organises the transport of the CLT-elements. From Ybbs/Danube, Lower Austria or Bad St. Leonhard, Carinthia – where the two Stora Enso production plants are located – the cargo is carried on the rail directly to Oslo and Trondheim, Norway. Subsequently the components are just-in-time delivered by truck from the loading terminal to the construction site. Each Laaprs-type stake car can virtually carry a whole building of 100 m³ CLT solid wood panels. The up to 25-tonnes, 14 metres long and three metres wide packages are wrapped in a special foil to protect the product from the elements.

Apart from the fact that wood is a sustainable, renewable and resource-efficient building material, which stores carbon dioxide hence, also the transportation of the building material to Norway is carried out ecologically – by 90 percent on the rail. The Rail Cargo Group, ÖBB’s freight transport division, generates annual sales of about EUR 2.1 billion and has 8,260 employees, making it one of the leading rail logistics companies in Europe.
