In the past financial year the GLS Austria parcel service has made great progress in terms of sustainability and environmental protection. Emissions per parcels were reduced by 7.2 percent compared with the previous period. This was the result of an analysis of the ecological balance of 2015/2016 in the course of the group wide sustainability strategy.
This reduction was the result of resource-saving actions of the parcel company; e.g. the kilometres covered by company cars declined by 80 percent. “We have sensitised our employees for the sustainability issue“, Dr. Axel Spörl, Regional Manager GLS Austria & Portugal, mentioned about the strategy.
Also transport partners are increasingly involved in the commitment to more sustainability. Thus parcels in Graz downtown are delivered by bicycle. More cities are to follow that example according to Axel Spörl. “Furthermore we are about to use the first electronic delivery vehicles“, he adds.
GLS, General Logistics Systems B.V. (headquartered in Amsterdam), realises parcel services for over 220,000 customers in Europe, complemented by logistics and express services. About 14,000 employees handle 431 million parcels per year. Every day around 20,000 vehicles are on route for GLS. In the financial year 2015/16 GLS achieved revenues of EUR 2.2 billion.
