From September 1 to 4, 2016 the Central European timber and forestry industry informed about the latest developments and trends at the International Wood Fair in Klagenfurt. The Rail Cargo Group, the cargo division of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), has had its own stand this year again (hall 5, stand C11) and positioned itself as a reliable logistics partner and the biggest carrier of timber in Central Europe.
In addition to long-standing and elaborated transport routes to Europe’s most important economic centers and high quality services, including the organisation of door-to-door deliveries throughout Europe, the company presented new projects and services at this big event.
The Rail Cargo Group has been successfully organising pellet transports across Europe for years. In the past heating season about 25,000 tonnes of pellets were transported from Romania, the Czech Republic and Austria to the south of Italy, stored there in centrally monitored and organised warehouses and delivered on demand to customers. Depending on the volume, the transport is organised in block trains, wagon groups or single wagons.
Since 2015, the Rail Cargo Group has been handling the transport of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) used for solid wood building, to Norway. These transports were previously carried out by 100 percent by truck and were now shifted to the environmentally friendly railway with the support of Rail Cargo Group. The benefits include loading consultancy, monitoring of the run to the destination railway station, documentation of the exact wagon run and proactive action in case of changes in the transport flow of the involved tracks.
Thanks to the industry-specific know-how and many years of experience in the transport of construction and solid wood to all over the world, several construction projects have been successfully completed since the project was started. In addition to schools and family homes, this includes also a library and multi-storey student residences.
